ADVOCACY EVERYWHERE CASE STUDY:

Running Successful Member & Consumer Calls For Action

Through our Advocacy Everywhere campaign concierge service, REAL Strategies has helped plan and execute hundreds of issue advocacy campaigns around the country. The service offers the ability to run issue advocacy campaigns at the state and local level for both members and consumers. To learn more about the Advocacy Everywhere concierge service for REALTORS® offered through NAR, check out the previous case study we created outlining the basic details of the program.

Over the past year, some of the most successful Calls For Action (CFAs) that we provided concierge services for utilized both member and consumer outreach. Below are two examples of CFAs that had both member and consumer components that successfully impacted policy outcomes at the state and local levels.

STATEWIDE MEMBER & CONSUMER CFA:

In the Spring of 2020, we helped a statewide trade association launch a Call For Action that implored the Governor to reverse their ban on Short-Term Rentals.  Association members were asked to contact both the Governor and their State Legislators.

  • The CFA was in response to the language from the Governor’s 10th modification to the state’s COVID-19 State of Emergency, which continued the ban on out-of-state visitors occupying short-term rentals.

  • Members contacted their state legislators and the Governor through a landing page we created.

  • 571 members took Action, for an Action Rate of 17%

Simultaneously, the association launched a Consumer Call For Action component that asked members to share a Consumer Action Landing Page with their friends and family.

  • Consumers were also asked to contact the Governor and their state legislators, asking the Governor to reverse their ban on Short-Term Rentals.

  • 145 Consumers took Action, for a total of 435 messages sent.

Less than a month after the start of the campaign, the Governor lifted the ban on Short-Term Rentals in large part due to the pressure from our campaign.

LOCAL MEMBER & CONSUMER CFA:

In the Summer of 2020, we helped a local trade association launch a Call For Action asking association members to contact their City Councilmembers to oppose a Just Cause and Relocation Proposed Ordinance.

  • Members were asked to email their City Councilmembers, as well as show up to a virtual Council meeting.

  • 210 members took Action, for an Action Rate of 19%.

Simultaneously, the association launched a Consumer Call For Action component that asked members to share a Consumer Action Landing Page with their friends and family asking them to contact their City Councilmembers to oppose the Just Cause and Relocation Proposed Ordinance.

  • Consumers were also asked to email their City Councilmembers, as well as attend a virtual Council meeting.

  • 89 consumers took Action on this Call For Action effort, for a total of 356 emails to the Council.

Members and consumers had a large showing at the virtual council meeting, and the ordinance was re-written so that the parts that were in contention were removed from the bill. Ultimately, the City Council reported that in addition to the large showing at the council meeting, they had received a total of 300 email messages from consumers and members that swayed them to remove the objectionable parts from the bill.
