Best Mail Piece for State Senate Candidate
Shown above is the mail piece that was used in the campaign.
ENTRY NAME: CARL MARCELLINO FOR NEW YORK STATE SENATE DISTRICT 5
Senator Marcellino faced a challenge: while Democrats hold an enrollment advantage
over Republicans of nearly 6,000 voters in the district, Marcellino won by fewer than 2,000 votes in 2016. That said, the Senator’s voting record on taxes is critical because Long Island taxpayers pay some of the highest taxes in the country. Marcellino voted to cap property taxes permanently and lower tax rates, to reduce the burden on taxpayers so that families can afford to live and stay on Long Island.
The objective of the mail messaging was to capture the anxiety Long Island families face when it comes to taxes, and voter anger toward Albany. Marcellino also highlights his record in the mailer as a leader who fights to hold the line on taxes.
IMPACT OF THE CAMPAIGN
Polling reveals that voters lean slightly negative in their feelings on the state’s direction. Voters are split in their evaluations of the New York’s direction. Just under half (47 percent) believe it is off track, while 45 percent believe it is headed in the right direction. Voters are slightly more positive than negative in their reviews of Andrew Cuomo’s performance as governor (51 percent approve, 46 percent disapprove). While Marcellino’s messaging was aligned with polling, Albany anti-incumbent sentiment ran high among voters.
DID THE CAMPAIGN WIN?
Marcellino lost his re-election bid with 45.7% of the vote.
